rajinderIn a shocking turnaround the BNP have voted to allow ethnic minorities to gain membership to their party. This follows a lengthy legal challenge by the Equality and Human Rights Commission last year, which ordered to the BNP to change their constitution and avoid race equality legislation.

Having been threatened with prosecution, Simon Darby, a BNP spokesman, described the case as "a deadly serious attempt to put us out of business". The extremist party has so far managed to avoid amending their rules which restricts membership to "indigenous Caucasians" only.

Party leader, Nick Griffin has urged party members to back the changes regardless, stating to the BBC that ethnic minority members would "be welcomed providing they accept and agree with our principles".

Since the astonishing change in constitution, Rajinder Singh, a Sikh man whose previously appeared on the party's online TV channel and openly supported leader Nick Griffin, has put himself forward as the first non-white member. BNP campaign officer, Martin Wingfield called for the party to give “the brave and loyal Rajinder Singh the honour of becoming the first ethnic minority member".
